The following is a quote from Waldemar Januszczak's article Why Frieze is Hot in the Culture section of the Sunday Times for 07.10.2007:
'I couldn't miss Jake and Dinos, because they were plonked right in the middle of the thing, churning out ludicrous portraits of anyone prepared to fork out £4,000 for the pleasure. I wanted to have mine done - who wouldn't? - but the queue was too long.

If you've got more money than sense and you've got an eye for an investment then spending £4,000 on a ludicrous portrait might be a good idea.
It all goes to show that for some the image is less important than the artist. A sorry state of afairs.
ER.

Hi Gwenlyn, you made a good point there. The already-famous artists have got more publicity from this, and some rich people got the reflected glamour of having their portraits done by someone whose names are in the papers. This is indeed NOT a sorry state of affairs for those involved!

The question of "I wanted to have mine done - who wouldn't? " requires more than just a note of complaint. As you point out, there are rewards for those involved.

For anyone who wants to see an answer to the question, though, I would refer you to the Stuckist website at http://www.stuckism.com/ Since 1999, Stuckists have been effecting a revolution against the conceptual art of people like the Chapmans, and still have a lot to say that is worth listening to.

A word of warning - this site puts forward robust arguments in uncompromising words. Not a place for the fainthearted, but well worth a visit.
